Best Sugar Cookie Latte Recipe (Including Iced Coffee)

One popular seasonal drink of the holiday season is a sugar cookie latte. However, unfortunately, this holiday favorite is not the cheapest of drinks. Yet, the good news is that you can easily make it at home.

One of the key ingredients of a sugar cookie latte is sugar cookie syrup. So, in this post, I will also give you my recipe for homemade sugar cookie syrup. Basically it is simple syrup with a few simple ingredients to add that classic sugar cookie taste.

After that we will go on to the actual beloved drink. The actual Starbucks sugar cookie latte is made with almond milk, but I am not a fan of almond milk in my coffee. That is why I prefer to make this drink with dairy milk. However, you can simply swap the normal milk for almond milk (or any other plant-based milk for that matter).

Ingredients for Sugar Cookie Syrup

  1. 1 cup water
  2. 1 cup light brown sugar
  3. ¼ tsp almond extract
  4. 2 tsp vanilla extract
  5. ¼ tsp butter extract

Do I Have to Use Light Brown Sugar?

No, you can really use whatever sugar you have at home.

White sugar will be a little bit less caramelley, but not less tasty in any way.

Real Butter or Butter Extract for Sugar Cookie Syrup?

Real butter doesn’t work well. Eventually it separates and then you have to re-heat it before use to get everything to mix. In cold drinks, like an iced sugar cookie latte, the butter solidifies when you add the syrup. So, you really can only use it in hot coffee drinks.

So, using butter extract is the better option in my opinion. However, if you are going to use it right away, it’s not a problem.

Do I have to Add Butter Flavoring?

I mean, no, you don’t have to. But the buttery flavor is what links it to the classic sugar cookie, which has a quite sweet buttery taste.

Amount of Almond Extract

I’m not a fan of almond flavored things. Almonds themselves are fine, but that is where it stops for me. So, I don’t add too much almond extract to my sugar cookie-flavored syrup.

However, you can easily add more almond flavoring if you want to increase the almond flavor.

Storage Instructions for Sugar Cookie Syrup

This homemade syrup should last at least two weeks in the refrigerator. Especially if you store it in an airtight container such as a mason jar or other glass bottle that seals tightly.

However, always make sure that the syrup is still good before using it in your morning coffee. No one, wants to start their day with a bad first sip of coffee.

Ingredients for a Sugar Cookie Latte

  1. Coffee grounds
  2. ¾ cup milk of choice
  3. 1 tbsp sugar cookie syrup
  4. Festive sprinkles (optional)

What Coffee is Best for a Sugar Cookie Latte?

Blonde espresso is pretty much the go to for this drink. However, a medium roast espresso that will also work well is Starbucks’s Pike Place roast.

Do I Need an Espresso Machine?

Not at all. You can make a great sugar cookie latte using a Moka pot or AeroPress. Instant espresso is also a good option.

Espresso machine

I don’t recommend regular coffee like French press coffee or drip coffee. It makes a great cup of strong coffee, but it is not as concentrated as espresso. This means that your latte will not be the same as the real thing.

What Type of Milk Should I Use?

Whole milk makes quite stable milk foam, but low-fat milk and skim milk also work well and they have less calories.

Dairy Alternatives

Like I mentioned earlier, this drink is actually made with almond milk. So, it stands to reason that almond milk works well for this recipe.

However, you don’t even have to use cow’s milk. You can use your favorite non-dairy milk alternative. Some examples include oat milk, coconut milk, or soy milk.

How to Froth the Milk

If you don’t have an espresso machine with a steam wand, it is not a problem. You can also go for a handheld milk frother or French press.

My favorite method is a French press because most coffee lovers already have one and home. If you don’t have one, they are fairly cheap. Also, it is really easy to use it.

How to Make Milk Froth with a French Press

  1. Put the milk in your French press and put it in the microwave for 30 seconds (if your French press has metal/shiny parts heat the milk in another container and then transfer to your French press.
  2. Vigorously plunge with the plunger for 15-20 seconds.

That’s it.

Sugar Cookie Latte Variations

Sugar Cookie Iced Latte

You can easily make this latte into an iced coffee drink. Simply add some coffee ice cubes (normal ones will water down your drink). And don’t steam/heat the milk. Make cold foam.

Otherwise the recipe is the same as for the hot latte.

Iced Sugar Cookie Almond Milk Latte

If you want to go for the real Starbucks drink make an iced sugar cookie latte and use almond milk instead of normal milk.

Sugar Cookie Cold Brew

  1. Add a tbsp of sugar cookie syrup to a glass of cold brew coffee.
  2. Add a bit of milk to taste.
