Easy Homemade Pumpkin Spice Sauce Recipe for Coffee

Fall has always been one of my favorite seasons. It’s just the time of year when we like to curl up with a book in front of the fire and enjoy something warm. Also, I guess one of the best things of fall is pumpkin spice lattes, it just has that cozy fall flavor. For that, you need pumpkin spice sauce.

In this post, I will share my simple recipe for making pumpkin spice sauce with you. This way, you can enjoy the perfect addition to your homemade lattes, pumpkin spice sauce in the comfort of your own home.

Pumpkin Spice Sauce Recipe

The ingredients for homemade pumpkin spice sauce are:

  1. 1½ cups water
  2. 1½ cups brown sugar
  3. 4 tbsp real pumpkin purée
  4. 1 tsp ground cloves
  5. 1 tsp ground ginger
  6. 2 tsp ground nutmeg
  7. 6 cinnamon sticks (or 3 tsp ground cinnamon (pumpkin spice))

Some people use pumpkin pie spice instead all of the spices that I mentioned. You can, of course, do that. I just found it easier to use the separate spices because I already had them. Also, my local grocery store doesn’t really stock pumpkin pie spice…

Homemade Pumpkin Puree

I made my own pumpkin purée because I feel that the additional cost of buying it is unnecessary seeing that the homemade version is so easy to make yourself.

The only ingredient is pumpkin.

You can add a pinch of salt, but I didn’t even bother because I was only going to use it for this sauce.

Steps to Make Pumpkin Purée

Here are the steps to make pumpkin purée yourself:

  1. Cook the pumpkin until it is soft
  2. Put the cooked pumpkin through the food processor

Steps For Pumpkin Spice Sauce

Okay, so, here is the easy recipe I’ve been talking about all along.

  1. Combine sugar and water in a small saucepan.
  2. Put it on the stove over medium heat
  3. Once sugar is dissolved, add all other ingredients
  4. Let it simmer for 20 min over low heat while stirring occasionally
  5. Remove from heat
  6. Immediately strain through cheesecloth
  7. Let it cool down
  8. Transfer to a mason jar for storing (you can store it in the fridge for up to a week)

You can strain it using a fine mesh strainer, but I found that it doesn’t work as well as a cheesecloth.

Other Ingredients to Try

I’ve also heard of people adding condensed milk to their sauce. It is definitely something that you can try if you have a sweet tooth.

I don’t do it for the simple reason that my tolerance for sweetness is quite low and I don’t want quite as sweet a drink.

Sugar-Free Pumpkin Spice Syrup

If you want to make this sauce a bit healthier, you can try a sugar-free version.

For this, just substitute the normal sugar for coconut sugar.

Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte Recipe

Now you are ready to make your own at-home pumpkin spice lattes. Here is how I make it.

Here are the ingredients to make a pumpkin spice latte:

  1. 1 shot espresso (I use Starbucks’s Pike Place Roast)
  2. 1 cup of whole milk
  3. 1 tbsp of pumpkin spice sauce
  4. Ground cinnamon (pumpkin spice) for garnish
  5. Optional whipped cream

Here are the ingredients to make a pumpkin spice latte:

  1. Froth the milk with a steam wand or milk frother
  2. Brew a shot of espresso
  3. Mix the pumpkin spice sauce with the espresso
  4. Add the milk to the mix
  5. Optionally top it off with whipped cream
  6. Sprinkle some cinnamon (pumpkin spice) over

I use coffee that I make with my espresso machine, but you can use regular coffee if you want.

Whole Milk Substitutes

You can use any kind of milk, really. For example, 2% milk and skim milk will also do the job. I just like to use whole milk because it froths better.

Also, you can use dairy alternatives if you don’t or can’t drink cow’s milk. Coconut milk, oat milk, or soya milk all work well. Maybe try the barista version of them. They are made to be used in coffee and froths better.

Coconut and coconut milk.

Iced Pumpkin Spice Latte

There is, of course, always the option to make this coffee drink into an iced version.

To do this, just add some iced cubes to the glass that you will be using before adding the other ingredients.

You can use espresso or try cold brew. (You can make cold brew in your French press)

Concluding Thoughts: Pumpkin Spice Sauce Recipe

Fall is pumpkin spice season, that is a known fact. But pumpkin spice lattes just take it to a whole new level. Which, is why I believe that pumpkin spice sauce is the perfect addition to your morning coffee. The perfect way to start your day this fall season.
