Homemade Pistachio Latte Recipe: Going Nutty With Coffee

I like mixing things that I like together to make other fancy things that I like. A pistachio latte is now on my list of mixed favorite things. If you are a fan of the Starbucks pistachio latte, this recipe will also be on your list.

This drink is a mix of the cozy flavors of sweet pistachio syrup, rich brown butter and espresso. It takes the classic latte to a new, nutty level.

In this post, I will show you how to make your own pistachio latte from the comfort of your own home.

Your first step will be to make pistachio syrup. However, if you don’t want to make your own, you can always buy some pistachio syrup.

Then you have to make the browned butter. You can leave out the butter, but it does add to the nutty latte vibe.

Finally, you will make the latte.

Recipe for Homemade Pistachio Syrup

Ingredients for Pistachio Syrup

Here is a list of ingredients to make your own pistachio syrup:

  1. 1 cup sugar
  2. 1 cup water
  3. ½ cup roasted, salted pistachios
  4. ½ tsp almond extract

If you can find salted pistachios just add pinch of salt in its stead.

Steps to make Pistachio Syrup

Here are the steps to make pistachio syrup:

  1. Mix the sugar and water in a small pot
  2. Bring to a boil and turn down the heat to a simmer
  3. Remove the pistachios from their shells and chop them up
  4. Add the pistachios to the pot with the sugar and water
  5. Let it simmer for another 10 minutes, stir occasionally
  6. Make sure that the sugar is dissolved before you remove it from the heat
  7. Let it cool a little bit, but not too much and then strain the syrup
  8. Add the almond extract

Once the syrup has cooled down, you can put is in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

Recipe for Browned Butter

The browned butter is really easy to make and it only has one ingredient.

Ingredients for Browned Butter

  1. ¼ cup butter

Steps to make Browned Butter

  1. Place the butter in a light-colored small saucepan (the light color is so you can see when the butter is brown)
  2. Put over medium-low to medium heat
  3. Stir gently while the butter melts, foams and turns golden brown
  4. Once the foam starts to go away and you see specks (milk solids) in the bottom of the pan, remove from the heat

Some Notes on the Ingredients

As a latte is an espresso-based drink, I wouldn’t recommend your using for example, French press or drip coffee. If you don’t have an espresso machine, you can use a Moka pot or AeroPress. Both of these make espresso-like coffee.

If, however, you also don’t have one of those, you can always opt for instant espresso powder. Nescafé’s instant espresso is quite good.

I use only one shot of espresso, but you can, of course, go for more shots of espresso.

However, the type of milk that you use is completely up to you and if you prefer different milk, go for it. You can also try plant-based milk such as almond milk or oat milk. Look for the barista non-dairy milk. They work best for frothing.

I like to use whole milk because it froths best and in this recipe it is especially important. If the frothed milk doesn’t have enough foam, the shortbread crumbles won’t stay afloat very long.

Some form of a nut milk can actually go well with the nutty flavor of this latte.

Frothing Method

If you don’t have an espresso machine, chances are you also don’t have a steam wand to steam the milk with. That is not a problem at all.

A handheld milk frother, French press and mason jar all do the job well. Using a French press to froth milk is my personal favorite method.

Iced Pistachio Latte Recipe

As we all know, iced coffee goes great with hot summer days. You can easily make an iced pistachio latte. Just don’t add butter to the iced version.

Here are the steps to make an iced pistachio latte:

  1. Add coffee ice cubes to an espresso and syrup mixx
  2. Then froth some cold milk
  3. Pour the milk over the espresso-syrup mix.

3. Ginger Latte

Unlike most other flavored lattes, a ginger latte doesn’t have to be sweet. Which is great if you ask me because sometimes we don’t want a sweet latte. But we do want a special latte and a traditional latte.

If this sounds great to you, you should check out my ginger latte recipe here.
