Homemade Peppermint Mocha Recipe: Easy and Delicious

When the holiday season comes around we tend to start craving some seasonal drinks. One of these drinks is a peppermint mocha.

It is one of the Starbucks holiday drinks. But I mean, going to Starbucks each time you crave one of these babies isn’t really an option, is it?

In this post, I will show you how to easily make a delicious peppermint mocha to sweeten the cold weather of winter. It is an easy recipe with a few basic ingredients that you can eventually play with to make your own perfect drink.

What is a Peppermint Mocha?

First things first, a mocha is basically coffee with some form of chocolate flavor. Most often we use mocha syrup/sauce. Some people like to use hot chocolate powder.

Most often it is topped with frothy milk and many people like to add some whipped cream to the mix.

To make a peppermint mocha, you simply have to add some peppermint flavor to the mocha sauce.

Ingredients for a Homemade Peppermint Mocha

  1. Ground coffee beans
  2. 1 cup milk
  3. 1 tbsp peppermint mocha sauce
  4. Whipped cream (optional)
  5. Mint chocolate pieces

What Coffee to Use?

If you do not have an espresso machine it is not a problem at all. You can always make espresso-like coffee with a Moka Pot or AeroPress. You can also opt for instant coffee like Nescafé Instant Espresso.

Instant espresso is better than using, for example, a French press or drip coffee machine. The reason is that although those methods give you strong coffee, it still isn’t as concentrated as espresso. So, you won’t get the same effect.

A Note of Coffee Beans

You can use any coffee beans that you like. My favorite coffee beans is Starbucks’s Pike Place roast.

Some Ideas About Milk

Milk Alternatives

Whole milk gives your coffee a sweet and creamy taste. However, if for some reason you prefer low-fat or skim milk, feel free to use that.

You can also use non-dairy milk like soy milk, coconut milk, almond milk, or oat milk.

Frothing the Milk

If you don’t have an espresso maker, you’ll need to use something else to froth the milk with.

A French press is my favorite way of doing it, but you can also use a handheld milk frother or mason jar if you want.

Peppermint Mocha Syrup

As I mentioned, you can either take my mocha sauce and add a teaspoon of peppermint extract. Or you can buy some peppermint syrup and substitute half the mocha sauce with ½ tbsp of peppermint syrup.

As a coffee lover, you probably like making your own versions of coffee drinks. Feel free to go crazy with this recipe. You just need the main ingredients and everything else is up to you.

The main ingredients for a peppermint mocha are the following:

  1. Espresso
  2. Milk
  3. Peppermint mocha sauce

That’s it. Using that as your base you can go crazy and make your new favorite drink. Here are some ideas for you to try.

White Peppermint Mocha

You can make a white chocolate peppermint mocha by swapping the normal chocolate syrup with white chocolate mocha sauce.

Iced Peppermint Mocha

Add some coffee ice cubes to the espresso. Also, make cold foam instead of frothing hot milk.

I top my peppermint mocha with mint chocolate. However, you can always try out some other toppings. Here are some ideas that you can try.
