Some flavors simply help to give a feeling to a certain time of year. Peppermint goes with the Christmas season. It is the perfect holiday drink to enjoy with your favorite holiday cookies.
A peppermint latte is a glorious combination of mint, coffee, and frothed milk. You can make it in a couple of minutes with a few simple ingredients or you can spice it up with some fancy ones.
Ingredients for a Peppermint Latte
- 2 espresso shots
- 1 cup milk of choice
- 1 tablespoon peppermint syrup
- peppermint topping (optional)
- whipped cream (optional)
Notes on the Ingredients
2 Espresso Shots
As per usual it is important to use good-quality coffee. I like to use Starbucks’ Pike Place Roast.
If you do not have an espresso machine, you can opt for a Moka pot or AeroPress.
I wouldn’t recommend using, for example, French press coffee. Although you can make strong coffee with it, it is not as concentrated as espresso.
In fact, I’d rather suggest using Nescafé’s instant espresso. It comes quite close to the real thing and will give you more of a latte experience.
Of course, you also don’t have to stick to two shots. You can use more or less shots of espresso to suit your taste preferences.
1 Cup Milk of Choice
I prefer whole milk because it froths the best. However, any milk will do. You don’t even have to stick to regular milk. You can opt for non-dairy milk such as oat milk, coconut milk, almond milk, or soy milk.
If you have an espresso machine, chances are you have a steam wand to use to make frothed milk. However, other methods that you can use to froth your milk include using a handheld milk frother, a French press, or a mason jar.
1 Tablespoon Peppermint Syrup
I make my own peppermint syrup using peppermint extract and simple syrup, but there is nothing stopping you from buying some if you prefer that.
Also, remember that you are free to adjust the amount of syrup to your heart’s desire.
Peppermint Topping (Optional)
For me, you simply cannot have a peppermint latte without some form of peppermint topping. Peppermint chocolate is my favorite, but your options are limitless. Anything from peppermint candies to fresh mint leaves or candy canes will do.
You can also try chocolate chips or shavings. If you want to make the drink more festive for the holiday season, you can also add some red sprinkles.
Whipped Cream (Optional)
This ingredient is totally optional and is great without it. However, it makes the drink fancier, which, I love.
However, if you want to make a drink with fewer calories, this is the ingredient to leave out.
