Mochas are great and so are macchiatos. Now, some genius somewhere decided to mix the two and the world is a better place for it. The best part of it all? You can make a mocha macchiato in the comfort of your own home.
In this post, I will give you a step-by-step guide to making a great mocha macchiato.
What is a Mocha Macchiato
The word “mocha” tells you that you mix some kind of chocolate with coffee. Very often we use chocolate syrup.
A macchiato is espresso topped with milk foam.
So, a mocha macchiato is a macchiato with chocolate syrup.
Ingredients for a Mocha Macchiato
This delicious coffee drink is made up of simple ingredients. Here is a list with all the ingredients:
- A shot of espresso
- 3/4 cup of whole milk
- 1 tbsp store-bought or homemade chocolate syrup
- Optional extra chocolate syrup for garnish
Homemade Chocolate Syrup
I really like using my own syrup for this recipe, but you are, of course, welcome to use your favorite chocolate syrup from the store too.
Ingredients for Chocolate Syrup
You will need the following to make your own chocolate syrup:
- 2 tbsp cocoa powder
- 2 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp sugar
- 1/4 tsp vanilla extract/essence
- pinch of salt
The above recipe will be enough for about two mocha macchiatos. If you want to make more, you can of course just increase the amounts.
Steps to Make Chocolate Syrup
Here are the steps that you need to follow to make a mocha macchiato:
- Add the cocoa powder, water, and sugar to a small saucepan.
- Turn the heat on to a medium setting.
- Stir the mix until all the sugar is dissolved (about 2 minutes).
- Turn off the heat.
- Add the vanilla essence/extract and the salt.
- Let the syrup cool down for about 30 min.
- Transfer the syrup to a mason jar for storage.
You can put this sauce in the fridge for up to a week. However, the syrup will get stickier upon standing. If it is too sticky by the time that you want to use it. Just put it in the microwave for 5 seconds.
Coffee Beans Used
The beans that you use for your mocha macchiato are of course based on personal preference.
I decided to opt for Starbucks’ Pike Place roast because it has a balanced taste with some cocoa notes that I feel go pretty well with the chocolate part of the drink.
Mocha Macchiato Recipe
Here is a great recipe to make your own mocha macchiato:
- Pull a shot of espresso.*
- Mix the espresso and a tablespoon of chocolate sauce in a cup.
- Froth the milk using your preferred method.
- Spoon the milk foam onto the chocolate-espresso mix.**
- Drizzle chocolate sauce to finish it off.
*If you do not have an espresso machine, you can always use a Moka pot or AeroPress to make espresso-like coffee. However, if you also don’t have either of those, you can opt for any coffee that you like, for example, instant espresso or coffee made in a French press. By definition, a macchiato is an espresso-based drink, but don’t let that minor detail stop you from making a delicious mocha macchiato.
**We won’t be using the steamed milk. You can, of course, add it, but then you are actually making a mocha latte and not a mocha macchiato. The idea of a macchiato is that it is espresso with foam on it. The word macchiato literally means “to mark”. So, basically, you mark the espresso with foam.
Strong Coffee Flavor
I you prefer a stronger coffee flavor, you can increase the amount of shots of espresso shots that you use when making the drink.
I know that many people do not drink dairy milk. Some merely because of taste preferences and others for reasons including medical ones. However, this does not have to be a reason for you not to be able to enjoy this delicious drink.
Soy milk froths really well because its protein content is very similar to that of cow’s milk. But it is absolutely not your only option, oat milk, almond milk, and coconut milk will work really well.
Variations on the Recipe
No one ever said that we have to stick to the plain version of a mocha macchiato.
White Chocolate Mocha Macchiato
Of course, you can adapt this recipe from a milk chocolate variation to a white chocolate variation.
In this case, you would just swap out the normal chocolate syrup for white chocolate mocha sauce.
Coconut Mocha Macchiato
This one technically comes from the list of milk alternatives, but I kind of want to put some extra emphasis on it.
Even if you do drink regular milk, you can still try this version for a mocha macchiato. It will give bring a Caribbean vibe to your living room or whatever.
To make this drink simply follow the steps that I listed earlier, but make the milk foam using coconut milk.
Caramel Mocha Macchiato
With this version of a mocha macchiato, you will swap out the chocolate drizzle for a drizzle of caramel sauce.
Now, you might ask: “Am I not just making a caramel macchiato then?”. The answer is no. With a caramel macchiato, you will use vanilla syrup in the espresso. Because we are still mixing chocolate syrup with the espresso, we are still making a mocha macchiato.
Mocha Macchiato With Honey Foam
I like this variation quite a lot. To make it you have to make a honey syrup first. The reason for this is that honey in its natural form is too sticky.
Here is a recipe to make honey syrup using just honey and water:
- I used a 1:2 ratio of honey to water.
- I put a mixture of them over medium heat on my stove until all the honey had dissolved.
- Then, I let it simmer for about 5 minutes.
- Lastly, I let it cool down before using it in my coffee.
Making Honey Foam
Now all you have to do is make honey foam to spoon on top of your drink instead of normal milk foam.
Here are the steps to make honey foam:
- Add one tablespoon of honey syrup to your milk.
- Froth the milk.
That’s it. Now you have some honey-flavored foam to make your drink a bit fancier.
