Imagine a latte but with chocolate sauce. Imagine the glorious flavors of strong coffee mixed with that of chocolate. Behold, a mocha latte.
Dramatics aside, mocha lattes are pretty amazing and if you are a coffee lover like me, you’ve probably tried one. Plus, the fact that you are here tells me that you probably liked it.
But sometimes we don’t want to go to a coffee shop to get out favorite drinks. Sometimes we’d much rather enjoy it from the comfort of our own homes. This is where my homemade mocha latte recipe comes in.
What is a Mocha Latte?
In short, a mocha latte is a regular latte with the added benefit of chocolate flavor. Best of both worlds, am I right?
Usually, we add mocha sauce for the chocolate flavor, but some people like to use hot chocolate powder. People who prefer a less sweet drink sometimes also use cocoa powder.
There are many variations on the drink and I will give you some ideas for them after the recipe. (Or you can skip to the section with the variations on a mocha latte.)
Ingredients For A Mocha Latte
Here are the ingredients for a delicious mocha latte:
- 1 shot of espresso
- 1 cup milk
- 1 tbsp homemade chocolate syrup (or store-bought if you prefer0
- Mini marshmallows (optional)
- Cocoa powder (optional)
I’m just going to give you some notes and ideas on all of the ingredients. If you want you can skip to the mocha latte recipe.
A Note On The Coffee Used
I love espresso coffee Starbucks’ Pike Place Roast has a very special place in my heart. You can read my review of the Pike Place roast if you want.
In any case, I do, however, know that not everyone has a fancy espresso machine. In that case, either a Moka pot or instant espresso powder will also do the trick. Nescafé Gold Instant Espresso is actually really good, almost as good as the real thing. So, I really recommend you try it out.
My Thoughts On Milk
I like to use whole milk because it froths best, however, there is no rule regarding this. You can use low-fat milk or whatever other milk you prefer.
You don’t even have to use dairy milk. Milk alternatives like soy milk, coconut milk, oat milk or almond milk can all do the trick. Maybe just look for the barista versions of these. They have been made to froth well.

Easy Mocha Latte Recipe
Here are the steps to make a great mocha latte right from the comfort of your own home:
- Pull a shot of espresso
- Mix the chocolate sauce with the espresso
- Froth the milk
- Pour the milk over the espresso and chocolate mixture

A Note On Frothing Milk
If you do not have an espresso maker with a steam wand, you can always use a handheld milk frother.
Froth Milk With A Mason Jar
Another option is to use a mason jar. Here are the steps to make frothed milk with a mason jar:
- Fill the jar halfway with milk
- Put the lid on tightly
- Shake vigorously for 20-30 seconds
- Remove the lid
- Heat the foam in the microwave for about 30 or 40 seconds
Variations On A Mocha Latte
Like with all coffee, coffee lovers inevitably spiced up mocha lattes. There are so many ways in which you can take this simple recipe for a mocha latte to the next level. Here are some ideas to spark your imagination.
White Mocha Latte
White chocolate mochas have taken the world by storm. To make this drink substitute the mocha syrup above with white chocolate mocha syrup.
Maple Mocha Latte
You can add a tablespoon of maple syrup to the coffee for that added sweetness. You could also opt to drizzle some of the syrup on top of the drink.
Caramel Mocha Latte
Add a tablespoon of caramel sauce to the drink or drizzle some over afterward.
Peppermint Mocha Latte
You can add a teaspoon of peppermint extract/essence to the mocha syrup that I described above. Top it off with your favorite peppermint chocolate.
Holiday Mocha Latte
Once the holidays draw closer we always want to make our drinks extra special. Why not crush some candy cane and sprinkle it over your mocha latte? You can even put the cane in the cup like a straw for extra decoration.
Iced Mocha Latte
No one ever said that you had to stick to a hot mocha latte, did they?
Try adding some coffee ice cubes to the espresso. Instead of normal frothed milk, use cold foam. You can make that in the same way that I described making milk froth with a mason jar. Just don’t heat it up after shaking it.
Creamy Mocha Latte
This version of a mocha latte is pretty much a classic. Many people, including me, love to add whipped cream on top of their drinks. Really worth the shot, I promise, it tastes amazing.
