Easy Caramel Sauce for Coffee: Best Homemade Recipe

So many coffee drinks contain caramel sauce and I mean, you can’t run to the coffee shop each time that you crave one of those drinks. This means that you’ll need some caramel sauce.

Although the store-bought versions can be great, I believe the best caramel sauce is homemade caramel sauce. The best news is that you can store it in the fridge or even the freezer until you crave it in your morning coffee or whatever one day (refer to my storage instructions for how and how long you can store your own caramel sauce).

My homemade caramel sauce recipe is easy to make and only asks for a few simple ingredients. But it makes an amazing, creamy caramel sauce perfect for anything from a caramel macchiato to a caramel latte or caramel frappuccino. It works great in both hot coffee as well as in iced coffee such as cold brew. You can even try it with your ice cream if you like.

  1. ½ cup white sugar
  2. ½ cup water
  3. ¼ cup heavy cream
  4. 1 tbsp unsalted butter
  5. ¼ tsp vanilla extract

Some Notes on the Ingredients

You don’t have to use white sugar. I prefer it because it dissolves faster than brown sugar. This makes the recipe much easier and far less likely to fail.

However, you can experiment with different types of sugar to see what you like best. Different kinds of sugar will also result in a different taste.

Cream Alternatives

You can substitute the cream with whole milk. However, the cream results in a thicker consistency which is why I think it is an excellent choice to add it.

If you don’t use dairy products, you can also try some of its plant-based alternatives like almond milk. It works well. You can also try oat milk.

I wouldn’t use coconut milk, because it has a very overpowering taste. However, if you like to, you are free to try it.

Do I Have to Use Butter?

The butter is totally optional and many caramel sauce recipes don’t include it. However, I have found that it adds a unique flavor to the sauce that I now cannot live without.

So, before you decide not to add it. First try it. Your life will be better for it.

Basically, you need a stove, a whisk and a saucepan.

I do, however, always end up using my frying pan because I have one that is white on the inside. This is really great when making caramel sauce because you can see the color better.

Of course, there are also saucepans with a light inside that you can use if you prefer to stick to a saucepan.

How to Store Caramel Sauce

If you have any leftover caramel sauce, you can store it in the fridge or even freeze it.

If you put it in the fridge, it should be fine for up to a week. However, if you want to store it for a while longer, I recommend freezing it.

I like to make caramel sauce ice cubes. That way I can simply take a cube or two from the fridge and thaw it at room temperature whenever I want to use it to make a cup of coffee.

Just don’t freeze it in a glass jar. My reason is that as the sauce freezes it will expand and that can cause the glass to crack if there is too much sauce in the container.

Salted Caramel Sauce

Salted caramel is one of the most popular flavors these days and with good reason. Adding a touch of salt to the glorious taste of caramel takes that great caramel flavor to the next level.

I would recommend adding a pinch of salt to the caramel sauce in my cup before adding the rest of the ingredients. However, you can also add ¼ tsp salt to the sauce after adding the vanilla extract too.
