Easy Butterscotch Latte Recipe (With Smoked Variation)

Butterscotch is one of those classic flavors that pairs well with so many other great flavors. One of the flavors that it goes with really well is that of strong coffee. Hence the birth of the butterscotch latte.

The subtle flavor of butterscotch compliments the bold flavors of coffee in an amazing way. So, if you have a sweet tooth you just have to try this hot coffee drink.

This butterscotch latte recipe only needs a few simple ingredients. It is also really fast and easy to make.

Ingredients for a Butterscotch Latte

Here is a list of the ingredients that you will need to make your own butterscotch latte:

  1. Ground coffee
  2. 1 cup of milk
  3. 1 tbsp homemade butterscotch sauce (or store-bought)
  4. Crushed butterscotch candy (optional)

A Note on the Coffee Used

The coffee beans that I always recommend is Starbucks’ Pike Place Roast because it is really that good.

I know not everyone has a fancy machine to make espresso with. You can also use coffee made with a Moka pot.

Another option is instant espresso. I know instant coffee is frowned upon in the coffee community, but Nescafé’s instant espresso comes pretty close to the real thing.

Butterscotch Sauce Recipe

I am usually too lazy to make the fancy versions of sauces and syrups. Nothing is different when it gets to butterscotch syrup.

You can try to make fancy homemade butterscotch sauce or you can use the shortcut that I do.

Steps for Butterscotch Sauce

  1. Mix a cup of milk and three tablespoons of butterscotch chips
  2. Put over medium heat and stir continually
  3. Turn off the heat once the chips have melted
  4. Let the sauce cool down before transferring it to an airtight container

Steps to Make a Butterscotch Latte

Here are the steps that you need to follow to make your own butterscotch latte:

  1. Pull a shot of espresso
  2. Froth the milk using a handheld milk frother or steam wand
  3. Pour coffee over butterscotch sauce in a cup
  4. Pour frothed milk over the coffee
  5. Top with crushed butterscotch sweets

Smoky Butterscotch Latte

You can easily transform this simple recipe into something even more glorious by adding a hint of smoke using a drop or two of liquid smoke.

Milk Alternatives

You can always try non-dairy milk in your coffee. Start with your favorite and experiment until you find the flavor that you prefer.

Maybe also look for the barista version of your favorite dairy milk alternative. They have been made to froth well.

Whipped Cream

Topping your butterscotch latte with some whipped cream will definitely take this hot drink to the next level.

You can either buy whipped cream or you can buy heavy whipping cream and whip it yourself with your hand mixer.

Mocha Butterscotch Latte

Spice up your butterscotch latte by adding a tablespoon of mocha syrup.

White Chocolate Butterscotch Latte

Similar to the normal mocha butterscotch latte, you can add a tablespoon of white chocolate mocha syrup to this hot coffee drink.
